The Commander of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Reserve Force, Maj Gen Joseph Ssemwanga, has commended veterans in the Teso, Elgon and Busoga sub-regions for their contribution to national defence and security, particularly through encouraging their children to join the armed forces.
Maj Gen Ssemwanga made the remarks during his commanders’ tour of the three sub-regions, which focused on engaging veterans and regional commanders on veterans’ welfare, the role of the Reserve Force and strengthening relations between the military and local communities.
He praised the veterans for their sacrifices during their years of service and for continuing to support Uganda’s security efforts by encouraging the next generation to serve in the UPDF.
The Reserve Force Commander urged veterans to take pride in their children serving in the military and called on communities to welcome and support soldiers returning home after completing their duties.
He emphasised that military service should not create divisions between soldiers, their families and their communities. Instead, he said, serving personnel should be accepted as members of their communities and given the support and encouragement needed to settle peacefully.
Maj Gen Ssemwanga also highlighted the continuing role of veterans in national security, noting that their experience, knowledge and influence within communities make them important partners in mentoring young people, promoting discipline and patriotism, and supporting community development.
He observed that strong relations between the military and the population depend on families and communities understanding the responsibilities of soldiers and providing a supportive environment when they return home.
The tour also provided an opportunity to discuss veterans’ welfare and explore ways of strengthening cooperation between former service personnel, serving soldiers, local leaders and community members.
Maj Gen Ssemwanga called for sustained collaboration among the different stakeholders to promote peaceful coexistence, national unity and security.
The UPDF Reserve Force continues to support national defence while maintaining engagement with veterans and communities across the country.
The Reserve Force Commander was accompanied by the Chief of Staff of the Reserve Force, Brig Gen Ssekiranda Mwanje, and other directors from the force during the tour.
