Over 60 families in Kumi and Mayuge districts received new houses from Habitat for Humanity Uganda, in a move aimed at improving welfare of the beneficiaries, and also bridge the housing deficit in the country.
Agnes Apio, 64 and a widow, shares a small grass-thatched hut with 6 of her children and grandchildren. She is one of the beneficiaries of the donated houses in Kadami sub-county, Kumi district.
The houses come with a 3000-litre water tank, ventilated pit latrine and a shower stall, each estimated at between 20 and 25 million shillings.
A decent home provides good health, and these donated housing units will enable the beneficiaries enjoy improved sanitation, and also access clean and safe water.
National Director for Habitat for Humanity- Uganda, Robert Otim, says “Decent homes are a foundation for breaking the vicious cycle of poverty, and are also a cornerstone of public health and catalyst for development”
During the same function, over 48 youth from partner families were equipped with different vocational skills and start-up kits to become self-reliant.
The district leadership asked the local communities to embrace the Parish Development model initiate to improve their household incomes and livelihood. Habitat for Humanity- Uganda has built, improved and rehabilitated over 40,000 houses, transforming lives of over 240,000 vulnerable families in Uganda, and contributing to 1.67 percent reduction to the housing deficit of 2.4 million units in the country.
