Karamoja MPs Endorse President Museveni’s Sole Candidature for 2026 Elections

The Members of Parliament from the Karamoja sub-region have announced their endorsement of the NRM’s sole candidature of President Yoweri Museveni for the 2026 presidential elections.

The backing by the eighteen MPs present out of the total 25 was witnessed by the NRM Secretary General, Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, during a mobilization tour in Moroto town, Moroto district, on Monday.

Legislators cited relative peace, stability, and the inclusion of the sub-region’s people in the nation’s growth and development as key reasons for their support of Museveni’s 2026 presidential bid without any internal contest from the NRM.

In an exercise overseen by NRM Electoral Chairman Dr. Tanga Odoi, MPs and party district leaders signed a banner bearing their petition to the president, emphatically declaring their intent to support and campaign for the NRM candidate at the appropriate time.

Speaking at the gathering in Moroto town, the Chairman of the Karamoja Parliamentary Group, Hon. Remegia Achia, stated, “Unlike the pre-NRM regimes, including the colonial government, which neglected the development and pacification of this area, the current government has successfully resettled and empowered the Karamojong through various programs like the parish development model, strategic disarmament policies, and Emyooga, leading to wealth creation and prosperity.”

Hon. Achia added, “We pledge all our loyalty to President Museveni as it is during his tenure that Karamoja has received significant support from the NRM government.”

“There is electricity, relative peace, and good roads like the Soroti-Moroto road, and the region is transforming. These achievements are connecting Karamoja to the rest of the country,” Achia further remarked.

Rt. Hon. Todwong, accompanied by the Director of Finance and Administration, Hajjat Medina Naham, praised the legislators for entrusting President Museveni to guide the nation for more years.

“We appreciate you for recognizing that President Museveni should continue leading because Karamoja is progressing. Previously, Karamoja was overlooked and unheard of when Uganda was under other leaders, not the NRM, but under the NRM, Karamoja is gradually developing without interruptions,” Todwong stated.

Todwong likened nation-building to constructing a home, “it requires patience, a clear vision, and mission, along with strong leadership like that of President Museveni.”

Hon. Peter Lokeris, the Minister for Karamoja Affairs, expressed gratitude to the president for his commitment to the sub-region.

“From the bush, President Museveni prioritized the pacification, settlement, and empowerment of the people in this area as point number 8,” Lokeris said.

Earlier, Todwong toured the Clinker cement factory under construction near Moroto town, which is expected to employ over 3,600 people. He also visited the Moroto Regional Referral Hospital to evaluate the health services being provided.
