New Vision wins the 2024 Standard Chartered Cup Tournament

New Vision, a leading media company won the 2024 Standard Chartered Cup – one day Tournament after they defeated MTN Uganda 1-0 in the final game played at Phillip Omondi Stadium in Lugogo on Saturday, 7th September 2024.

A record 40 teams and 280 players played a total of 95 games, divided into 8 groups of 5 teams each side and played for 10 minutes, five-a-side (with two substitutes) games on a round robin basis (Group Stages, Round of 16, Quarter finals, Semi Finals and the Finals).

During the SC Cup tournament, the CEO Sanjay led the inspection of team line and gave a welcome speech, encouraging the teams to give it their all for the grand prize. The games commenced on 4 mini pitches of 40 x 30 metres, and these were named after the current Liverpool Players: Pitch 1. Mohammed Salah, Pitch 2. Alisson Baker, Pitch 3. Virgil van Dijk, Pitch 4. Trent Alexander Arnold.

After a full day of competition, the games wound up with the only goal of the final game coming from forward Julius Kafuluma of New Vision who kicked the ball into the net to book the team tickets for a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ trip to Liverpool, United Kingdom.

In this 7th edition of the Standard Chartered Cup Tournament, New Vision got into the final after defeating Steel & Tube Ltd (the defending champions) while MTN edged past Uganda Breweries 3-2 on penalties.

Individual accolade winners included;

Most Valuable Player – Julius Kafuluma

Top scorer – Emmanuel Nsubuga

Best Goalkeeper – Karim Kamoga

The 1st, 2nd and 3rd teams all got trophies and medals.

Sanjay Rughani the CEO of Standard Chartered Bank after handing over the medals and while addressing the media said;

“We all witnessed the historical final game of the 7th edition of the SC Cup in awe. The teams did their best and it was an amazing atmosphere, display of finesse, sportsmanship, and spirit. I want to thank the 40 corporate teams that heeded our call and registered their teams in record time to compete this year. It was truly a great day of competition, maturity, camaraderie, tension, anxiety, fair play and excitement. At the end of the day, the best team won! We congratulate New Vision upon their well-deserved win!”

A trip to the iconic Anfield stadium beckons, and to the boys, it will surely leave an indelible mark on their lives! We are forever grateful.” 

The winning team, New Vision wins the all-expenses paid trip to the UK which will include a visit to the Liverpool Academy and meet up with a Liverpool FC legend, watch a live English Premier League Liverpool game at Anfield, a tour of Melwood, the Beatles story and as well as visit to the Liverpool Museum with 3 nights’ accommodation, meals among other perks and treats.
