The Ministry of Works and Transport has announced new measures to strengthen safety in bus operations and reduce driver fatigue on Uganda’s roads.
The measures were announced by Minister for Works and Transport Hon. Fred Byamukama following a meeting with bus operators, Traffic Police and other transport stakeholders at the Ministry headquarters.
Under the new directive, drivers operating on long-distance routes of more than 300 kilometres must be replaced for the return journey. A driver who completes the outward journey will not be allowed to drive back on the same route.
Traffic Police have been directed to apprehend bus operators and drivers who disregard the requirement.
For routes of less than 300 kilometres, a driver will be allowed to travel to the destination and return once. However, upon returning to the starting point, the driver must stop for the day and will not be permitted to undertake a third leg on the same day.
The Ministry has urged all bus operators to comply with the measures, saying they are intended to minimise driver fatigue and enhance passenger safety on Uganda’s roads.
