Hon. Nakut Seeks to Amend Political Parties Law to Streamline Public Funding

Hon. Nakut Faith Loru Chuna, the Member of Parliament representing Napak District and Treasurer of the NRM Parliamentary Caucus, has been granted leave of the House to introduce a Private Member’s Bill titled The Political Parties and Organisations (Amendment) Bill.

The proposed legislation aims to amend the existing Political Parties and Organisations Act, Cap. 178, with a key focus on regulating the allocation of government funding and public resources. According to Hon. Nakut, the amendments will limit such support to only political parties that are members of the National Consultative Forum (NCF) a move she says will enhance accountability and strengthen structured political engagement.

In addition, the Bill proposes to formally recognize the Inter-Party Organisation for Dialogue (IPOD) and the Forum for Non-Represented Political Parties and Organisations as integral organs under the NCF. These reforms, Hon. Nakut explained, aim to create a more inclusive and coordinated political framework while ensuring that public resources are distributed within established institutional mechanisms.

The introduction of the Bill sets the stage for what is likely to be a vibrant debate on the role of state funding in political activity and the future of multi-party democracy in Uganda.
