UPDF Mountain Division Graduates 90 Artillery Specialists to Boost Tactical Capabilities

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Mountain Division has officially commissioned 90 newly trained artillery personnel, bolstering the force’s combat capabilities with specialized knowledge in advanced weaponry.

The passing-out ceremony was held at the Mountain Division headquarters in Muhooti, Kabarole District, and presided over by Brig Gen Paul Muwonge, the Deputy Commander of the Mountain Division.

Brig Gen Muwonge underscored the critical role of artillery in contemporary combat, stating its significance in both traditional warfare and operations against insurgencies. “Artillery is a key element that complements infantry units, whether during conventional warfare or anti-insurgency missions,” he said, referencing its decisive impact in historic battles such as Kaya and Oraba.

He also pointed to the sustained effectiveness of artillery in ongoing missions targeting the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where it has played a pivotal role in dismantling rebel strongholds and asserting operational control.

This operational success, he noted, is a result of the UPDF’s integrated combat approach, championed by the Commander-in-Chief, which ensures synchronized and powerful responses for swift outcomes.

Brig Gen Muwonge further emphasized the need for continued evolution in tactics and training as warfare becomes more dynamic, with adversaries adopting flexible strategies and emerging technologies.

He lauded the trainees for their perseverance throughout the intensive course and appreciated the political commissar’s efforts in offering ideological mentorship during the training program.

Lt Col Kilama, Commander of the 105 Artillery Brigade, described the course as a significant milestone in the professional growth of the soldiers. “Retain your manuals and revisit them often,” he advised. “The expertise you’ve gained should always be readily accessible and deployable when duty calls.”

The graduating group included two female personnel, reflecting UPDF’s ongoing dedication to gender inclusivity in its ranks.

The function was attended by the District Administrative Officer, brigade commanders, and senior military leaders from the Mountain Division.
