The Uganda Cubs have made history after defeating former champions France 1–0 to qualify for the knockout stage of the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2025 in Qatar the first time a Ugandan team has advanced past the group stage at a FIFA World Cup.

Match Summary

Going into their last Group K match, the CECAFA Zonal Champions needed nothing less than victory against the more experienced French side. After several early attempts, James Bogere broke the deadlock in the 18th minute, finishing off a well-timed pass from skipper Hamuza Ssengoba at the Aspire Zone Complex in Doha.

France had chances to level the score Pierre Mounguengue shot wide in the 31st minute, while Christ Batola missed another opportunity five minutes later. Uganda’s Richard Okello was denied close to halftime by the French goalkeeper, who pushed his effort out for a corner.

In the second half, France increased pressure, with Tidiane Diarrassouba sending a left-footed shot off target after 68 minutes. The Cubs, however, stayed organized in defense and limited France’s chances until the final whistle.

Road to Qatar

Uganda began their campaign with a 2–1 loss to Canada, followed by a 1–1 draw with Chile before the famous win over France sealed their progression to the Round of 32.

The Cubs’ qualification for the World Cup was the result of years of consistent youth football investment by the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) through school competitions, regional academies, and nationwide talent scouting.

Guided by Head Coach Brian Ssenyondo, Uganda earned its ticket to the World Cup after winning the CECAFA U-17 Zonal Championship at Nakivubo stadium where they defeated Tanzania in the final. They later impressed in the AFCON U-17 qualifiers, securing Uganda’s first-ever appearance at the global tournament.

Head Coach Brian Ssenyondo praised his players’ determination, saying the team came to compete and had shown discipline and maturity throughout the tournament.
