The Ministry of Works and Transport has intensified efforts to improve safety at railway level crossings following a series of fatal incidents along the rail corridor.
The move comes amid growing concerns over speeding and non-compliance by road users at crossing points, which have been identified as high-risk zones.
On Wednesday, a joint team led by Winstone Katushabe, Commissioner for Transport Regulation and Safety, held a meeting with officials from the Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) to address the rising safety concerns.

During the meeting, both parties agreed on a number of measures aimed at reducing accidents. These include the introduction of stricter speed control mechanisms, improved road signage, stronger enforcement of traffic regulations, and the accelerated automation of railway crossings.
The stakeholders also emphasized the importance of public awareness, with plans underway to roll out a targeted campaign to educate road users on proper conduct at railway crossings.

To ensure effective implementation, a joint technical committee has been established to coordinate interventions and prioritise high-risk crossing points across the country.
Officials say the measures are intended to significantly reduce accidents and enhance overall transport safety as Uganda continues to develop its rail transport infrastructure.
