H.E. Robie Kakonge, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Uganda to the United States, has met Phoenix Suns rookie Khaman Maluach in Phoenix, Arizona, as part of efforts to strengthen sports links and promote Ugandan talent.

The meeting, held alongside officials from the Phoenix Suns, comes as the team competes in the 2026 NBA playoffs. The Ambassador congratulated the side and highlighted Maluach, a South Sudanese-born player raised in Uganda, as a key link between Uganda and the global game.

The Suns (0-2) fell to the Oklahoma City Thunder (2-0) in Game 2 of the first round following a 120-107 loss on Wednesday night. After trailing by one point at the end of the first quarter, Oklahoma City outscored Phoenix 70-48 across the second and third quarters to take a 100-77 lead into the final period.

Plans are under discussion for a visit to Uganda by Maluach and team officials, with focus on promoting basketball, supporting young players and building partnerships.

The embassy says the engagement is part of its sports diplomacy programme aimed at raising Uganda’s profile and expanding opportunities for talent development.

Basketball in Uganda has grown through school competitions and academies, but gaps remain in facilities, funding and professional pathways.

Officials say closer links with international teams could open opportunities for training, exposure and investment.

The planned engagement comes ahead of the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, as Uganda looks to use sport to strengthen international partnerships and support athlete development.
