Somalia’s State Minister of Endowment and Islamic Affairs, Abukar Jeylani, has commended the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) troops serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia for their role in renovating Barawe Airport, describing the effort as a major boost to regional stability and connectivity.
Speaking during a meeting with local leaders and security officials at the airport, Jeylani praised the troops for their professionalism, patriotism, and Pan-African spirit, noting that their work reflects the strong ties between Uganda and Somalia. He emphasized that the upgraded facility will enhance transport links and support ongoing stabilisation efforts in the region.
The State Minister of Constitutional Affairs, Ilyaas Sheikh Omar, said feedback from the local community shows growing confidence in the discipline and conduct of the troops. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to working closely with security forces to achieve lasting peace.
Battle Group 45 Commander, Justus Musenene, confirmed that the airport is now fully operational following the successful completion of renovation works by AUSSOM/UPDF engineers. He noted that despite challenges, the mission was accomplished, and the troops remain committed to mentoring the Somali National Army to sustain peace and stability.
Meanwhile, Battle Group 45 Engineer, Charles Baraza, said the renovation was completed within a short timeframe and now meets recognised aviation standards. Barawe Airport Manager, Mohamed Nureini, expressed appreciation to the troops, confirming that the airport has resumed flight operations following the upgrades.
