Government Set to Release Shs20 Billion to Kampala Flood-Affected Traders

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has assured Kampala traders whose businesses were affected by the October 2025 floods that Government is preparing to distribute the Shs20 billion pledged by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as compensation for their losses.

Nabbanja made the assurance while meeting leaders of the Federation of Uganda Traders Associations (FUTA) to discuss how the funds will be distributed among the affected traders.

The Prime Minister said her office had received a verified list prepared following investigations by the Internal Security Organisation (ISO), identifying 737 traders eligible for consideration under the Government support programme.

She directed that the list of beneficiaries be displayed at the affected buildings to allow traders and members of the public to verify the information and raise any concerns before payments begin.

The verification exercise follows the floods that hit several buildings in Kampala in October 2025, destroying property worth billions of shillings belonging to traders.

Following the incident, President Museveni pledged Shs20 billion to support traders who had suffered losses. Nabbanja subsequently constituted a committee, including officials from ISO, to verify claims from more than 2,000 traders who said they had been affected.

The Prime Minister said the verification process will be completed within two weeks, after which payment to eligible beneficiaries will commence.

The meeting with traders was also aimed at agreeing on modalities to ensure that the funds are distributed fairly and transparently.

Nabbanja’s engagement comes amid growing tensions over the delayed compensation, with some affected traders recently accusing Government officials of withholding the funds. The traders had staged protests and made allegations against the Prime Minister and Kampala Minister Minsa Kabanda, accusations both officials have denied.

The meeting was attended by the Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister, Alex Kakooza, and senior officials from the Ministry of Finance, including Patrick Ocailap, among others.

Government says the latest verification exercise is intended to ensure that the Shs20 billion reaches genuine traders affected by the floods.
