Ministry of health in partnership with Joint Clinical Research Centre have solicited for a multi 30,000 US dollar budget from Centre for Disease Control and Prevention for the expansion of a state-of-the-art calibration laboratory at Uganda National Health Laboratory Services Butabika.
As a way of improving research on different specimen, government started Uganda National Health Laboratory Services in Butabika to help keep the laboratory equipment intact for accuracy and quality in making observations.
Overtime the laboratory space got minimal with the growing scope of work prompting for JCRC through its strengthening public health laboratory systems in Uganda project to look out for legible funders of the laboratory’s rehabilitation and expansion.
At the launch of the expansion exercise to be funded by Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, the Deputy executive director JCRC Drorah Ssebagala says the soliciting was made to create enough space for storage of equipment.
“Commissioning the renovation of this lab, this renovation has been supported by our partners CDC. We expect that this renovation will costs us about 300,000 US dollars and all expect that it will take us three months. So from now to end of September we should be done,” the Deputy executive director JCRC Drorah Ssebagala said.
Dr. Suzan Nabadda the commissioner for laboratory and testing in the ministry of health says the rehabilitation will improve the scope of equipment and their safety.
“The current space that we had that was given to us and built by CDC was small and it was handling a small scope of pressure, mass, weight for the different measurements of the laboratories. But because of change in the scope of tests things change in the new technologies and the increase in the number of creditable laboratories across the countries, there was need to increase the staff to increase the scope that we are doing but the space we had was small. So through support of USG government through CDC gave money through CRC to come and support and expand our land” Dr. Suzan Nabadda the commissioner for laboratory and testing in the ministry of health said.
JCRC also donated a brand-new double cabin to ease movement of researchers and engineers.
