Uganda’s para powerlifting team has intensified preparations ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, with three athletes set to represent the country in what will be its biggest-ever squad in the sport at the Games.
The team is currently training at ISK Gym in Ndeeba as it fine-tunes preparations for the multi-sport event, which runs from July 23 to August 2. Uganda is expected to send athletes in ten sports disciplines, with para powerlifting among the medal hopefuls.
The women’s team comprises Janet Nakayobyo, who will compete in the lightweight category, and Rebecca Zawedde, who will feature in the heavyweight division. Zawedde has appealed for increased government funding to strengthen the growth and competitiveness of para sports in Uganda.
Captain Dennis Mbaziira is the team’s only male athlete and will be making his second Commonwealth Games appearance. Having previously competed at the Paralympic Games and the Islamic Solidarity Games, Mbaziira believes the experience gained on the international stage has prepared him to challenge for honours in the men’s heavyweight category above 72 kilograms.
Head coach Kenneth Sekiranda says the team’s recent participation at the Africa Powerlifting Championships in Algeria provided valuable competition and confidence ahead of the Commonwealth Games.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games will be held under the theme “More in Common,” promoting inclusivity, shared values, and stronger community connections. Around 3,000 athletes from 74 nations are expected to compete, with Uganda projected to field at least 55 athletes across ten sporting disciplines.
