The Kingfisher Development Project in Kikuube District is set to play a significant role in Uganda’s oil production, with the project holding an estimated 186 million barrels of 2P reserves and a planned peak production of 40,000 barrels per day.
Located on the Buhuka Plain along the eastern shores of Lake Albert, the Kingfisher project is a key component of Uganda’s upstream petroleum programme.
The project includes 31 planned wells, comprising 20 production wells and 11 water-injection wells, distributed across four wellpads. It will also feature a Central Processing Facility (CPF) with a processing capacity of 40,000 barrels of oil per day.
In addition to crude oil production, the project is expected to produce approximately 20,000 tonnes of LPG annually, supporting Uganda’s efforts to expand access to alternative sources of energy.
The development includes about 19 kilometres of infield flowlines, as well as a 46–50-kilometre feeder pipeline connecting the facility to Pump Station One of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP).
With an estimated capital investment of USD 2–3 billion, the Kingfisher Development Project is expected to contribute to Uganda’s energy security and broader economic development while creating opportunities for local participation.
The project is being implemented in line with Uganda’s national content and environmental requirements, as the country moves closer to commercial oil production.
Kingfisher is therefore expected to remain a major milestone in Uganda’s oil journey, strengthening the country’s petroleum sector and its anticipated contribution to the national economy.
