Uganda Parliament Achieves Triple Victory in EAC Inter-Parliamentary Games

Parliament asserted a triple triumph on Saturday, December 9, 2023, in their inaugural matches at the ongoing East African Community (EAC) Inter-Parliamentary Games in Kigali, Rwanda.

Under the leadership of Hon. Helen Nakimuli (NUP, Kalangala District), the women’s volleyball squad initiated Parliament of Uganda’s initial victory in the tournament, securing a convincing three sets to zero win against Kenya National Assembly.

The remarkable performance seemingly motivated the men’s volleyball team, who exhibited an emphatic performance to secure a 3-0 victory against the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA). Noteworthy members of the EALA side included Hon. George Odongo and Hon. Gerald Blacks Siranda, both representing Uganda at the Arusha-based regional assembly.

Post the final whistle, the EALA team joined their Ugandan counterparts in celebration despite their defeat.

Later in the evening, the men’s basketball team, led by Hon. Mwine Mpaka (NRM, Mbarara South Division), added to the success by defeating Burundi Parliament 51-27.

These achievements maintain Uganda’s parliamentary team with an unblemished winning record.

In an interview, Hon. Nakimuli ascribed the victory to hard work and tactical prowess.

“Our strong suit was our serves. A proficient [ball] service ensures victory as your opponent struggles to cover the court,” Nakimuli explained.

She, however, emphasized the need for the team to enhance their court coverage and endurance for improved future performances.

In Sunday’s fixtures, Uganda is scheduled to face South Sudan in women’s basketball at Lycee de Kigali Gymnasium, while the men’s team will contend with the hosts, Rwanda.

The netball team is set for their inaugural match against South Sudan, and the men’s volleyball team aims for another triumph against Kenya at Ecole Notre Dame des Anges.
