NEMA Halts the Degradation of Nakiyanja Wetland

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has halted the ongoing degradation of the Nakiyanja wetland to protect the critical ecosystem at Sonde, Kira Municipality in Wakiso District. Nakiyanja is a vital wetland that drains into River Sezibwa, ultimately serving the greater Kayunga and Mukono districts. Our inspectors have determined that the degradation was allegedly caused by Ms. Genagiri Limited, who misled inspectors with a certificate of approval (No. NEMA/EIA/15422) issued for the development of mixed residential and commercial structures on a small piece of dry land elsewhere. Instead, the developer illegally encroached on the nearby Nakiyanja wetland.

A joint technical team from the Ministry of Water and Environment, NEMA, and the Environment Protection Police Unit effectively halted the development. The degradation of the wetland poses risks of increased flooding, loss of biodiversity, and habitat destruction for various species. Further investigations into the matter are ongoing and will result in a Restoration Order. Additionally, there will be prosecution or payment of administrative fines.

NEMA has indefinitely suspended approvals and issuance of permits for activities in wetlands since September 2021 and will continue to take decisive action to address all environmental violations across the country. The Authority calls upon the citizens of Uganda to remain vigilant in the pursuit of a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment.
