Third Uganda-India Joint Trade Committee Meeting, 25th-26th March 2025, New Delhi, India

The 3rd Session of the Uganda-India Joint Trade Committee (JTC) meeting commenced today, 25th March 2025, at the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Vanijya Bhawan, New Delhi.

The meeting was opened by Shri Jay Bhadoo, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Commerce, India. The High Commissioner of India to Uganda, H.E. Upender Singh Rawat, and the High Commissioner of Uganda to India, H.E. Amb. Prof. Joyce Kakuramatsi Kikafunda, were among the dignitaries present.

The Ugandan delegation includes representatives from the following MDAs: Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives; Ministry of Internal Affairs (Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control); Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries; Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Ministry of Works and Transport; Ministry of ICT and National Guidance; Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development; Civil Aviation Authority; Uganda National Bureau of Standards; and Uganda Airlines.

The JTC is co-chaired by Ms. Priya Nair, Economic Advisor, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, and Amb. Elly Kamahungye Kafeero from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The agenda includes the review of bilateral trade and investments, the status of the Duty-Free Tariff Preference (DFTP) scheme and lines of credit, as well as exploring cooperation in mining, finance (Unified Payments Interface – UPI), agriculture, MSMEs, standards, and health.

The meeting is expected to address trade bottlenecks, including non-tariff barriers and standards, explore mechanisms to leverage opportunities under the DFTP scheme to expand Uganda’s exportable commodities, and enhance cooperation in the highlighted sectors, among other objectives.
