The Kampala Metropolitan Police has intensified operations across various divisions, targeting criminal hideouts and suspected offenders in a bid to curb rising urban crime. According to police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, the coordinated efforts have led to multiple arrests and the recovery of suspected stolen property and dangerous weapons.
In the Kira Road policing area, particularly Mulimira and Kyebando, 31 suspects were arrested during an operation led by the Divisional Police Commander. The suspects are currently detained at Kira Road Police Division awaiting screening and fingerprinting. Meanwhile, in Ntinda’s Kigowa area, a patrol team intercepted individuals believed to be planning criminal acts. Although the suspects initially fled, officers recovered weapons including pangas, hammers, and iron bars, as well as jerrycans containing suspected fuel. Two suspects were later apprehended while hiding in a residential garage, with preliminary findings linking them to a planned arson attack tied to a land dispute.
In Nateete’s Kanaala Zone, police arrested a suspect found in possession of four motorcycles believed to be stolen, along with multiple number plates. Verification of ownership is ongoing. Similar operations in Entebbe, specifically Bunono and Guda, resulted in the arrest of 31 suspects connected to theft, burglary, and vandalism. These suspects have since been charged and are awaiting court proceedings.
Kasangati Division also saw significant activity, with over 47 suspects arrested from betting centres and known criminal hideouts in areas including Wampewo Ward, Gayaza, and Kijabijjo. Additionally, two suspects were detained for operating an illegal garage used to dismantle suspected stolen motorcycles, with several parts and vandalized components recovered.
Police have noted a growing trend where criminals exploit betting centres, unfinished buildings, and makeshift structures as hideouts. Authorities say operations will continue to dismantle such networks, emphasizing their commitment to maintaining public safety across the Kampala metropolitan area.
