Uganda, UN partners intensify response to Ebola outbreak

On 15 May 2026, Uganda confirmed an outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease, with two cases linked to the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. One of the patients, a Congolese national, sadly died on 14 May 2026, while the country continues to report no confirmed local transmission. Authorities have so far listed 127 contacts who are being closely monitored to prevent further spread.

In response, the United Nations Country Team in Uganda, under the leadership of UN Resident Coordinator Leonard Zulu, quickly activated a coordinated humanitarian response alongside government and NGO partners. About US $3.5 million was immediately repurposed to support urgent containment efforts, while additional resources and expertise are being mobilized.

Working closely with the World Health Organization and other health partners, the response is focusing on early detection and treatment of cases, infection prevention, risk communication, and strong community engagement. Contact tracing and cross-border surveillance remain critical given the regional nature of the outbreak.

The Government of Uganda is leading the overall national response plan, with partners supporting life-saving interventions such as medical supplies, protective equipment, logistics, and support for frontline health workers. Together, efforts continue to prioritize saving lives and preventing further spread of the disease.
