The Uganda Police Force has clarified earlier information regarding the death of 30-year-old Lubega Fahad, admitting that an initial statement issued on its social media platforms contained inaccuracies due to a communication gap from Kiwatule Police Station.
According to police, the incident was officially reported and investigations were opened under CRB 064/2026. Preliminary findings indicate that Fahad allegedly posed as a property agent and received UGX 12 million from a client seeking rental property after advertising a house online through Jiji Uganda.
The complainant reportedly paid the money on June 2, 2026, after agreeing to rent a house in Kyanja at a monthly cost of UGX 3 million. However, upon returning to the property, he was informed that the house was not available for rent but was instead being offered for sale. Attempts to reverse the transaction were unsuccessful as the funds had already been withdrawn.
Police said the suspect was later traced to a bank, where he was apprehended. It is alleged that he subsequently escaped while under the watch of a bank security guard, prompting members of the public to pursue and assault him.
The suspect was later taken into custody at Kiwatule Police Station but died shortly after arrival. His body was transferred to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Police said investigations into both the alleged fraud case and the circumstances surrounding the mob action are ongoing. The force also condemned mob justice and urged the public to hand over suspects to law enforcement authorities for lawful handling.
The Uganda Police Force expressed regret over the earlier miscommunication and reaffirmed its commitment to providing accurate and accountable information to the public.
