The Inspector General of Police, Abas Byakagaba, has inspected the Police Barracks at Nsambya in Kampala as part of efforts to improve the welfare and living conditions of police officers and their families.
The IGP was accompanied by senior police officers, including the Director of Health Services, AIGP Dr Moses Byaruhanga, and Under Secretary Aggrey Wunyi.
During the visit, Byakagaba interacted with officers and their spouses at the K9 Base in Nsambya, where he listened to their concerns and outlined measures to improve their living environment.
Byakagaba described Nsambya Barracks as more than a residential facility, saying it serves as a strategic hub for police personnel housing and deployment within the Kampala Metropolitan Police area.
He acknowledged the challenges facing officers and their families and said the Police Force would introduce immediate interventions during the current financial year to improve conditions at the barracks.
“Security and welfare begin at home. Aware of the challenges you face, we are rolling out immediate interventions in this financial year to restore dignity, safety and order at Nsambya Barracks,” Byakagaba said.
The IGP stressed that the welfare of police officers is essential to effective policing, noting that officers who live and work in safe, decent and dignified environments are better positioned to serve and protect the public.
He also urged residents of the barracks to maintain discipline, cleanliness, responsibility and cooperation as the Force works to transform police housing facilities into safer and more orderly communities.
