The Ministry of Water and Environment has engaged the Tooro Kingdom leadership on strengthening collaboration in water resources management, sanitation and environmental conservation across the region.
A delegation led by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Alfred Okot Okidi, met with His Majesty King Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I to discuss ways of improving water and sanitation services while protecting critical ecosystems in Tooro.
Dr Okidi highlighted the degradation of River Mpanga as a major concern, noting that the river remains an important resource for communities in the region. He called for renewed efforts to implement the River Mpanga Catchment Management Plan developed to guide restoration and conservation efforts.
The Permanent Secretary also raised concerns over the region’s water access levels, which currently stand at 69 per cent, below the national average. Coverage varies across districts, with Kyegegwa at 46 per cent and Kamwenge at 84 per cent.
He announced plans for the Kyegegwa-Mpara-Ruyonza Water Supply System, which is expected to extend safe water services to 154 villages in Kyegegwa and neighbouring areas.
Dr Okidi further expressed concern over wetland degradation and deforestation, particularly around critical ecosystems such as the Kibale Forest Reserve. He proposed that the Kingdom provide land for a demonstration project showcasing sustainable wetland management, controlled irrigation and fish farming.
King Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I welcomed the partnership, describing access to clean water and sanitation as essential to community health, dignity and economic development.
The King pledged to use his leadership to mobilise communities to protect River Mpanga, combat plastic pollution and prevent waste dumping in water bodies.
The engagement is expected to strengthen cooperation between the Ministry and Tooro Kingdom in advancing sustainable water management, environmental protection and climate-resilient development.
