UCU Tuition Run Raises Over Sh50 Million for Needy Students

Uganda Christian University (UCU) has raised more than Sh50 million in contributions and pledges during its annual Tuition Run to help students struggling to pay tuition fees.

The event, held at the university’s main campus in Mukono, brought together students, staff, university partners and well-wishers to raise funds for students at risk of dropping out because of financial difficulties.

UCU Vice-Chancellor Professor Aaron Mushegyenzi said the university has students whose education is interrupted by circumstances beyond their control, including the death of parents or guardians who pay their tuition fees.

He said some students also come from families where the main income earner has lost a job or become unable to work following an accident, leaving them without the means to complete their studies.

Mushegyenzi thanked Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, who attended the event as chief guest, for contributing Sh20 million towards the scholarship fund.

He also recognised Uganda Partners for contributing Sh2 million and thanked Star Express, Audio Studio, Jibu and other organisations for supporting the fundraising drive.

The Vice-Chancellor appealed to individuals and organisations that did not attend the event to contribute to the fund.

The annual Tuition Run is organised by the Guild President and the guild cabinet, with support from the Directorate of Student Affairs and university management.

Money collected through the event is deposited into a scholarship fund administered through the university’s Finance Department. Students facing financial difficulties can apply for assistance to pay their tuition fees.

According to the university, approximately 150 students benefit from the initiative annually.

Besides the Tuition Run, UCU organises other fundraising activities, including singing and painting competitions, to raise money for the scholarship fund.

During the running competition, Apenyo Bekele emerged as the overall men’s winner, while Prisca Waku won the women’s category.

The 28th Guild Government, which organised this year’s event, encouraged students, individuals and organisations to continue supporting the fund.

Those interested in contributing can contact the Directorate of Student Affairs or the 28th Guild Government at UCU’s main campus in Mukono.
