During Women’s Month, Entebbe Airport Customs focused on combating illicit phone imports, resulting in the interception of 325 high-end phones in ‘Operation Holy Grail’.
Smugglers employed various tactics, including disguising phones as fashion accessories and concealing them within unusual items like Play Station consoles and automotive spare parts.
The operation uncovered 36 phones hidden in a cosset, and 39 more concealed within a smuggler’s unusually developed calf muscles.
Overall, the recovered smartphones, including the latest models from Apple and Samsung, were valued at approximately USD 70,000. Offence management procedures are currently underway.
Travellers are advised to remain vigilant and cautious, avoiding offers from individuals promising easy passage through customs in exchange for money. Often, when a smuggler is apprehended, the true beneficiary remains elusive, leaving authorities to pursue justice.
