General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) and Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations, held discussions with his Congolese counterpart, General Christian Tshiwewe Songesha, Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Their dialogue focused on strengthening collaborative ties in defence and security.
“Your presence today highlights your commitment to fortifying our bilateral relations,” remarked General Kainerugaba during the meeting at the Defence Intelligence and Security headquarters in Mbuya.
He underscored the notable progress achieved through Operation Shujaa, saying, “We have made substantial advancements in our joint efforts, especially in countering ADF insurgents,” while stressing the operation’s positive influence on civilians, particularly women and children. “The accomplishments of Operation Shujaa have illustrated the success of our partnership,” he added, affirming that the mission reflects both Uganda’s and DRC’s dedication to enduring peace and stability within the region.
General Kainerugaba also referred to a recent engagement between President Yoweri Museveni and President Felix Tshisekedi as crucial for bolstering regional security.
In response, General Tshiwewe commended the strong alliance between their militaries, emphasizing the cooperative spirit fostered by their Presidents. “This close relationship between our forces, along with the cooperation between our heads of state, highlights a shared commitment to addressing key concerns,” he said, adding, “Our role as commanders is to execute this mission effectively through Operation Shujaa.”
The gathering included several high-ranking officers, such as the Commander of Land Forces, Lt Gen Kayanja Muhanga; Commander of UPDF Air Force, Lt Gen Charles Okidi; Commander of Special Force Command, Maj Gen David Mugisha; and Chief of Joint Staff, Maj Gen Jack Bakasumba, along with other Generals and Senior Officers from both UPDF and FARDC.
