Guinea’s CHAN Mission Begins as 26-Man Provisional Squad Announced and Training Camp Opens in Senegal

By Nabakiibi Doreen Malaika
With the countdown to the TotalEnergies CHAN 2024 well underway, Guinea has named a 26-man provisional squad, setting the stage for what could be a major redemption story following the senior team’s failure to qualify for the upcoming AFCON.

Now, the focus shifts to the Syli Locaux. The Guinean Football Federation has taken an ambitious step by holding preparations abroad. The team begins camp on Wednesday, July 2, in neighboring Senegal, where they’ll immediately face a tough test with back-to-back friendlies against reigning CHAN champions Senegal on July 4 and 7 in Dakar.

A Squad With Promise and a Bit of Drama
Head coach Souleymane Camara has selected a strong core from Guinea’s top domestic clubs including Horoya AC, Hafia FC, and Milo FC. But one major omission has stirred debate — the absence of Ligue 1 Pro’s top scorer, Moussa Moise Camara. With no official explanation, fans and pundits are left speculating on whether it was a tactical decision or something behind the scenes.

Despite that, the squad features a promising mix of experience and rising talent. Players from lesser-known clubs like Renaissance FC and SAG have been included, pointing to a broader vision that goes beyond short-term results and aims to develop depth for the future.

Group C Challenge Looms
Guinea faces a serious challenge in Group C, where they’ve been drawn against Algeria, South Africa, Uganda, and Niger. It’s a competitive group, but strong performances in the friendlies could give the team much-needed momentum.

This CHAN campaign is about more than qualifying or trophies. For Guinea, it’s a chance to restore national pride and prove the strength of its homegrown talent on the continental stage.
