Kigata Alumni Donate Chairs as School Battles Furniture Shortage

Students at Kigata High School in Kabale District have been studying and sitting examinations under a furniture shortage, forcing old students to step in with a donation of chairs.

The Kigata High School Old Students Association handed over chairs to the school in Kigata Parish, Kanamira Sub-county, as part of a wider campaign to improve classroom conditions.

The association says it plans to mobilise and deliver 400 chairs to the school by the end of this year.

Speaking during the handover, the association chairperson, Mwebaze Syson, said the donation was part of an alumni effort to support the school and help current learners study in a better environment.

Mwebaze, who studied at Kigata High School between 2003 and 2007, said former students have a duty to return and support the institution that shaped them.

“As old students, we believe it is our responsibility to support the school that shaped our future. Our goal is to improve the learning environment and inspire more alumni to contribute to the development of Kigata High School,” Mwebaze said.

The head teacher, Richard Byembabazi, welcomed the donation, saying the chairs had come at a time when the school was struggling with inadequate furniture.

He said the shortage had affected both classroom learning and examinations, with some learners lacking proper sitting space.

Byembabazi said the school still needs more support, citing inadequate furniture, the need for a bigger main hall and limited teachers’ accommodation.

He appealed to well-wishers, development partners and other old students to support the school in addressing the remaining gaps.

Students said the additional chairs will make lessons and examinations more comfortable.

The old students’ association says the chair donation is part of a broader push to improve learning conditions at Kigata High School and encourage more alumni to take part in the school’s development.
