Senegal got the better of Nigeria in a tightly contested Group B clash at the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, claiming a 1-0 win in front of a fired-up crowd at Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar City.
The venue was buzzing with anticipation as two of Africa’s biggest footballing names faced off on the island’s biggest stage yet. But despite all the hype, the first half didn’t live up to the billing. Both sides looked cautious, with most of the action bogged down in the midfield. By halftime, the scoreboard was still untouched, and chances were hard to come by.
Second-half breakthrough
Things finally came alive after the break. Nigeria tried to take control, with Ismaila Sarki and Taiwo Abdulrafiu pushing the pace and probing Senegal’s backline. But the Senegalese defense, marshaled by captain Cheikh Diouf, stayed organized and focused.
The deadlock was broken in the 75th minute, thanks to a Nigerian mistake at the back.
A loose back pass gifted Senegal’s Cheikh Christian Gomis a golden chance, and he made no mistake coolly sliding the ball past goalkeeper Mustapha Aliko to give the Lions of Teranga the lead.
Nigeria threw everything forward in the final 15 minutes, but Senegal held firm. Lamin Gueye was everywhere in midfield, breaking up play and helping his side manage the game expertly until the final whistle.
Group B Impact: The win takes Senegal closer to the knockout rounds, while Nigeria’s path just got steeper. They’ll now need a must-win result in their final group game to stay alive in the tournament.
