Uganda has outlined its railway development plans and investment opportunities at the Global Rail Transport Infrastructure Conference (#GlobalRail2025) held in Abu Dhabi last week.
The country was represented by Hon. Fred Byamukama, Minister of State for Works & Transport (Transport), who was accompanied by senior ministry officials. In his presentation, Hon. Byamukama highlighted ongoing railway sector reforms and underscored Uganda’s commitment to modernizing its rail infrastructure to boost trade and regional connectivity.
During bilateral engagements at the conference, Etihad Rail, the United Arab Emirates’ national railway company, expressed readiness to support the development of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) extension. The project will run from Naivasha, Kenya 🇰🇪, through Uganda 🇺🇬, to Juba, South Sudan 🇸🇸, providing a critical link to enhance integration and facilitate smoother movement of goods and people across the region.
Hon. Byamukama also featured on a high-level panel discussion titled “Building Connected Nations: The Role of Transport and Infrastructure in Sustainable Development.” The session explored how transport infrastructure can accelerate economic growth and foster sustainable regional development.
The conference brought together global railway stakeholders, offering Uganda an important platform to attract partnerships and investment for its ambitious railway development agenda.
