Sharks’ dominance: Victoria University claim third straight Varsity 7s title

Victoria University’s rugby sevens side, the Sharks, have cemented their place as the team to beat after clinching a third straight Varsity 7s championship.

They wrapped up the series with a 31–10 win over Uganda Martyrs University Nkozi in the final at Kyambogo University, finishing the season unbeaten and untouchable.

The Sharks set the tone early with quick passing, solid defence, and sharp finishing that left opponents chasing shadows. Their only slip came mid-season, a narrow 7–5 loss to UMU, which sparked a strong response. They bounced back to dominate Makerere 26–7 and never looked back.

Captain and MVP Mwaka Darell praised his teammates for their focus and discipline. “We trained hard, stayed together, and believed in our system. That’s what kept us on top,” he said.

The win completes a remarkable three-year run that started in 2023 when the Sharks lifted their first Varsity 7s crown. They defended it in 2024 and have now made it three in a row, marking them as one of the most consistent university rugby sides in the country.

Beyond university rugby, Victoria University continues to hold its own in the Uganda Rugby Premiership, pulling off key wins against seasoned clubs like Eagles RFC and Warriors. Home games at Kyadondo Rugby Club now draw packed crowds, reflecting the team’s growing fan base.

Vice Chancellor Dr Lawrence Muganga hailed the players for their discipline and spirit. “They have shown what hard work and determination can achieve. This victory speaks to the culture of excellence we are building,” he said.
