The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has honored the late Major General Francis Takiriwa during a solemn memorial service held at All Saints’ Cathedral, Nakasero, in Kampala.
Maj Gen Takiriwa passed away on 7 February 2026 at the UPDF National Referral Hospital.
The Minister of State for Defence and Veteran Affairs (Veteran Affairs), Hon. Huda Oleru Abason, described the deceased general as a remarkable and kind-hearted officer whose vibrant personality shone through despite the rigors of military service.
“General Takiriwa was always cheerful and caring. Today, we bid farewell to a man who served his country with unwavering loyalty. His mission on earth has come to an end, and he has returned to the Lord. Though he is no longer with us physically, his legacy will live on in our hearts,” she said.
In a message conveyed on behalf of the Chief of Defence Forces, Lt Gen James Mugira, the Managing Director of the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) stated that Maj Gen Takiriwa exemplified the fundamental principles of the UPDF: patriotism, professionalism, discipline, integrity, and loyalty.
“He was a distinguished soldier whose career demonstrated commitment to duty and pursuit of excellence. In every assignment entrusted to him, he led from the front, maintained high standards, and inspired confidence through his conduct and dedication,” the message read.
Lt Gen Mugira also reflected on Maj Gen Takiriwa’s resolute leadership in 1999 while commanding troops in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he dealt a significant setback to enemy forces.
Over the course of his service, Maj Gen Takiriwa held several key command, instructional, and national leadership positions, including Chief of Education, Sports and Culture, Commander of the 2 Division, and Deputy Commander Land Force. He also represented the UPDF as one of its ten members in the 10th Parliament.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Ms Florence Sanyu, the late general’s sister, described him as caring, diligent, and devoted to service.
“He dedicated his life to serving the nation. He was compassionate and supported many children who loved him dearly,” she said.
The service was led by the Most Rev. Dr Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, and was attended by Ministers, Members of Parliament, senior generals, service commanders, UPDF officers of various ranks, clergy, friends, and family members.
