African Union Chair Urges Restraint as Middle East Escalation Intensifies

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has voiced deep concern over the recent military escalation involving the United States, Israel and the Islamic Republic of Iran, which has already seen Iranian forces launch retaliatory strikes across the region.

In a statement, Mr. Youssouf described the unfolding conflict as a serious intensification of hostilities in the Middle East that threatens global stability. He called on all parties to exercise restraint, pursue urgent de-escalation and engage in sustained diplomatic dialogue.

Recent military action began when the United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes against targets inside Iran, including in Tehran and other cities, drawing swift retaliation from Iranian forces that have since fired missiles toward Israeli territory and assets linked to the U.S. in Gulf states. Explosions have been reported in multiple countries in the region as tensions continue to rise.

“As the situation evolves, all parties must act fully in accordance with international law and the United Nations Charter to safeguard international peace and security,” the AU Commission chair said.

Mr. Youssouf warned that further escalation will worsen global instability, with serious implications for energy markets, food security and economic resilience, particularly in Africa, where many countries remain vulnerable to external shocks.

He also urged continued diplomatic engagement, noting ongoing international mediation efforts facilitated by the Sultanate of Oman to prevent further deterioration.

“Sustainable peace can only be achieved through diplomacy, not through force,” Mr. Youssouf reiterated, underscoring the African Union’s support for peaceful resolution of conflicts.
