The Government has undertaken governance measures at Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL), removing the Board Chairperson and placing the Managing Director on forced leave.
In a statement, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development said the actions follow a review of the company’s management.
“The services of the Chairperson of the Board have been terminated, and the Managing Director has been placed on forced leave to allow for a comprehensive review of the Company’s management and operations,” the statement said.
To ensure continuity, shareholders have appointed an Interim Board Chairperson. The Board has also appointed an Acting Managing Director to oversee operations during the transition period.
The Ministry said the interim arrangements will remain in place until the positions are substantively filled, describing the changes as part of routine governance and oversight procedures aimed at strengthening institutional performance, accountability and service delivery in the energy sector.
It assured the public and stakeholders that electricity supply and distribution services will continue uninterrupted.
Energy Minister Hon. Can. Dr. Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu said government appreciates the understanding and cooperation of stakeholders as it works to strengthen governance and operational effectiveness at UEDCL.
