The Commander of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) 3 Infantry Division, Major General Wilberforce Sserunkuma, has praised security agencies in North Karamoja for their joint efforts in restoring and maintaining peace across the sub-region.
Speaking during a regional security meeting in Karenga District, Maj Gen Sserunkuma noted that the security situation in Karamoja has improved significantly, creating an environment that is supporting development and economic growth.
He pointed to ongoing projects such as the establishment of Kidepo International Airport in Karenga District, the emergence of new factories, and the continued growth of the tourism sector as clear indicators of the benefits of sustained peace and stability.
“The peace dividends are already evident. Today, we are witnessing the establishment of Kidepo International Airport in Karenga District, new factories across Karamoja, and tremendous growth in tourism. This is all because of our collective effort, discipline, and dedication to serving our government. We must protect and consolidate these gains,” he said.
Maj Gen Sserunkuma urged security personnel to strengthen coordination and cooperation among agencies and adopt a proactive approach to preventing crime and insecurity.
He also emphasized the need to safeguard government development programmes and investments, noting that the region is undergoing significant socio-economic transformation. According to the commander, the improved security environment has also boosted the profile of Kidepo Valley National Park, attracting greater international attention and increasing tourism revenue.
The UPDF commander further called on security leaders to maintain close collaboration with local leaders and communities through regular engagements, describing community partnerships as vital in understanding security challenges and preserving the achievements made under Operation Usalama Kwa Wote.
The meeting brought together senior officers from the UPDF and Uganda Police Force, including the Commander of 405 Brigade, Col Ruziro Nuwagaba, Karenga District Police Commander AIP Manana Martin, Kidepo ASTU Commander SP Muyonjo Nicholas, and other security officials.
