Uganda Joins Commonwealth Africa Speakers’ Conference in South Africa

Uganda is taking part in the 19th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth Africa Region, currently underway at the Emperor’s Palace Convention Centre in Kempton Park, Johannesburg, South Africa.

The Ugandan delegation is led by Rt. Hon. Jacob Oboth Oboth, Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda. The conference, which brings together parliamentary leaders from across the Commonwealth African region, is scheduled to run from 16 to 20 June 2026.

Upon his arrival in South Africa on 15 June 2026, the Speaker was received at OR Tambo International Airport by officials from the Uganda High Commission in Pretoria, led by Uganda’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Ambassador Paul Amoru.

During the engagement, officials from the High Commission briefed the Speaker on the ongoing incidents of Afriphobia-related violence reported in some parts of South Africa. Discussions focused on exploring measures to enhance the safety and welfare of Ugandans living and working in the country.

The conference provides a platform for Speakers and Presiding Officers from across Africa to discuss parliamentary governance, democracy, and issues affecting the region while fostering cooperation among Commonwealth member states.
