UBC was established by the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation Act of 2005 with the mandate to:
1.Develop the Corporation into a Public National Broadcasting Centre of excellence, for a purpose of providing electronic media and consultancy services that educate and guide the public.
2.Achieve and sustain comprehensive national radio and television coverage.
3.Achieve and sustain a common carrier status.
UBC has undertaken most of the activities envisaged in the budget forecast, within its current structural arrangement and functions in an attempt to strive and attain its insightful corporate goals. Currently UBC is working on a number of projects including:
1. Finalizing different radio relocation & decongestion project to position all radio studios in the communities they serve.
2. Implementing Digital terrestrial television (DTT) project (phase 3) to achieve national coverage using the fibre optic backbone to reduce the cost of content distribution.
3. Implementing The DTT/DTH (Direct to Home) hybrid broadcast project to illuminate the off-grid areas of the country while achieving 95% signal coverage for national FTA channels
4. Finalizing the radio network expansion project to replace obsolete transmission equipment and install capacity in the border and hard to reach areas of the country to achieve 95% national coverage.
