The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has assured residents of Greater Kampala that roads and other infrastructure affected by ongoing water pipeline construction works will be restored, with reinstatement activities scheduled to begin this month.
The assurance comes as NWSC advances the Rehabilitation, Restructuring, Rezoning and Extension of the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area (GKMA) Water Supply Network Project, aimed at improving water supply reliability and addressing shortages across the metropolitan area.
The corporation said the project involves laying 69 kilometres of transmission pipelines, constructing reservoirs at Kanyanya, Kabulengwa and Mutungo, establishing booster stations at Kungu and Kabulengwa, and upgrading the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.

According to NWSC, the project will enable more water from the Katosi Water Treatment Plant to reach consumers. Although the plant has a production capacity of 160 million litres per day, only about half of this capacity is currently utilised due to limitations in the existing distribution network.
Upon completion, the expanded network is expected to improve water supply in Kira, Kasangati, Namugongo, Buwaate, Bulindo, Mulawa, Gayaza, Matugga, Kawempe, Nansana, Wakiso and surrounding communities.
The project is expected to benefit an additional one million people and support growing water demand through 2040.
NWSC said the overall project is scheduled for completion in August 2027, although some sections, including the pipeline connecting Namugongo to Kasangati, are expected to be commissioned earlier, in January 2027.
On road restoration, the corporation said reinstatement of affected roads, verges, walkways and other areas is included in the project scope. It added that restoration works had already started on some gravel road sections following the completion and testing of pipeline installations.

The corporation said it is coordinating with municipal authorities and the Ministry of Works and Transport to minimise disruptions and ensure affected infrastructure is restored to its original condition or better.
NWSC apologised for the inconvenience caused by excavations and urged residents to remain patient as construction continues.
The project is expected to strengthen Kampala’s water distribution infrastructure, reduce supply interruptions and expand access to reliable clean water across the metropolitan area.
