MAT ABACUS Business School Graduates 8th CFO Leadership Academy Cohort, launches 9th Cohort with call for Alumni Mentors under the Desired Project

MAT ABACUS Business School, in partnership with the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU), today successfully held the Graduation Ceremony of the 8th Cohort and the Official Launch of the 9th Cohort of the CFO Leadership Academy at Four Points by Sheraton Kampala.

The high-level engagement brought together senior finance executives, board leaders, regulators, technology experts, academia, and corporate leaders under the theme: “Are You the CFO Your Board Will Still Need in 2030?”

The event featured a thought-provoking panel discussion exploring the evolving role of Chief Financial Officers in an era defined by digital transformation, shifting governance expectations, sustainability pressures, emerging technologies, and changing boardroom dynamics.

The panel brought together distinguished voices from diverse sectors, including:

Mr. Francis Kamulegeya, Chairman of I&M Bank Uganda and with enriching insights from his PwC Uganda Country Senior Partner experience, offering governance and boardroom leadership perspectives;

Mrs. Josephine Okui Ossiya, Director on the Board of the Bank of Uganda and CEO of the Capital Markets Authority, who unpacked the strategic positioning of the modern CFO;

CPA Derick Nkajja, Chief Executive Officer of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU), who highlighted the future of professional accountancy and leadership development;

Mr. Noah Baalessanvu, Head of Technology at Savannah Group Africa and pioneer of the Blockchain Association of Uganda, who shared insights on technology, artificial intelligence, and the future digital economy.

Speakers emphasized that the CFO of the future must evolve beyond traditional financial stewardship into a strategic business leader capable of driving innovation, influencing boards, managing uncertainty, and creating sustainable enterprise value.

The event also spotlighted the DESIRED Project, a mentorship and coaching initiative that calls on CFO Leadership Academy alumni to give back to the profession by nurturing young and emerging accountants — ensuring that the leadership transformation experienced in the Academy cascades to the next generation of finance professionals.

The event celebrated the successful completion of the Academy journey by the 8th Cohort, recognizing finance leaders who have undergone an intensive leadership transformation programme designed to strengthen strategic thinking, governance capability, executive influence, and business leadership.

Speaking during the event, the organizers reaffirmed their commitment to building a new generation of African finance leaders equipped to navigate increasingly complex business environments while contributing meaningfully to organizational transformation and national development.

The launch of the 9th Cohort signals the continued growth of the CFO Leadership Academy as a premier executive leadership platform shaping future-ready CFOs and strategic finance executives across the region.
