The Principal Judge, Lady Justice Jane Frances Abodo, has called for greater attention to the welfare and mental wellbeing of judicial officers, saying the demands of dispensing justice often come with heavy pressure, emotional strain and stress.
Speaking during an inaugural unwinding dinner for High Court judges at the Supreme Court Conference Hall in Kampala, Lady Justice Abodo said judges carry enormous workloads and are often exposed to difficult human situations through the cases they handle.
She said the Judiciary must continue creating spaces where judicial officers can step away from court business, interact freely and regain strength for their work.
“The amount of work on our desks, the emotions, the stress and everything that comes with this work can be overwhelming. So, to see all of you here laughing and not talking about judgments was truly refreshing,” Lady Justice Abodo said.
She commended judges who travelled from different High Court circuits and divisions to attend the event, saying their presence showed unity and collegiality within the Judiciary.
Lady Justice Abodo said the gathering had come at a timely moment, after earlier concerns over Ebola had nearly affected plans for the event.
Lady Justice Sarah Langa Siu, who moderated the evening, praised the Principal Judge for prioritising the welfare of judges and for creating an environment where judicial officers can relate beyond formal court duties.
She said the evening was intended to help judges unwind, strengthen bonds and ease the pressure that comes with their work.
