“Uganda ready to Host 2031 Africa Games”, says NCS General Secretary Dr Ogwel

Uganda is gearing up to host the 2031 Africa Games following its successful bid to stage the continent’s premier multi-sport event for the first time in history.

The announcement was made recently after Uganda edged Nigeria in a competitive bidding process to secure the hosting rights for the 15th edition of the quadrennial Games.

National Council of Sports (NCS) General Secretary Dr. Bernard Patrick Ogwel described the achievement as a major milestone for the country and a reflection of the significant investments made in sports infrastructure and related sectors over the years.

Dr. Ogwel noted that hosting the Africa Games will leave a lasting legacy for Uganda by showcasing not only its sporting capabilities but also its educational, cultural and tourism potential to the rest of the continent.

The Games will be staged under a multi-city model, with Kampala, Hoima and Lira earmarked as host cities.

According to Dr. Ogwel, the influx of athletes, officials and fans from more than 50 African nations will create economic opportunities for businesses and communities across the country.

A proposed 23 sports disciplines are expected to feature, including athletics, football, boxing, swimming, rugby, basketball, cycling and cricket.

Dr. Ogwel expressed confidence in Uganda’s ability to successfully organize the Games, citing the country’s experience in hosting major international events such as CHOGM and NAM, as well as preparations for the 2027 AFCON tournament.

Before hosting in 2031, Uganda will closely study lessons from Egypt, which will stage the 14th Africa Games next year.
