The Committee on Government Assurances and Implementation has demanded an explanation from the Ministry of Works and Transport over delays in fulfilling the Government’s commitment to construct more than 30 bridges on national roads.
The committee, chaired by Deputy Chairperson Hon. Anna Adeke, wants the ministry to explain the causes of the delays and provide assurance that Government commitments on bridges and other road infrastructure will be fully implemented.
Hon. Robert Ssewagudde questioned why delays in construction works during the 2021/22 financial year were attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdown.
Ssewagudde noted that essential workers and providers of critical services were allowed to operate under established Standard Operating Procedures during the lockdown, and questioned why this could not have enabled progress on the projects.
The committee is expected to seek further clarification from the Ministry of Works and Transport on the status of the projects and measures being taken to address the delays.
