KIRA MUNICIPALITY.
Parliament’s Committee on Physical Infrastructure is preparing to inspect roads in Kira Municipality following complaints that ongoing water pipeline installations have damaged sections of recently completed roads.
The Deputy Chairperson of the committee has inspected Shimon Road and several other roads between Kira Police Station and Namugongo Martyrs’ Shrine, where contractor Sogea is laying water pipes.
According to the Deputy Chairperson, Shimon Road had been completed and was still within its defects liability period when sections were excavated to accommodate the water pipelines.
The inspection follows concerns raised during a joint discussion on UBC TV on Wednesday, where the Deputy Chairperson represented Parliament’s Committee on Physical Infrastructure.
During the programme, concerns were raised over the increasing practice of cutting through completed roads to install water pipelines, with Shimon Road and another road in Bugolobi cited as examples.
The Deputy Chairperson said the damage to Shimon Road was particularly concerning because the road contractor had completed the works satisfactorily before the subsequent excavation.
The inspection team included Engineer Mukiibi, Commissioner for Urban Roads at the Ministry of Works and Transport, Engineer Drek, the Contract Manager for Shimon Road, and former minister Musa Francis Ecweru.
The committee is now arranging a wider inspection of the affected project sites to assess the damage caused by the pipeline works.
The planned visit is expected to bring the condition of the affected roads before Parliament’s Committee on Physical Infrastructure for further consideration.
