The Republic of Uganda and the Federal Government of Somalia have today pledged to strengthen diplomatic ties and enhance joint security initiatives between the two nations.
This commitment was made during a meeting led by Uganda’s Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Hon. Marksons Oboth, and Somalia’s Minister of Defence, His Excellency Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, held at the Serena Hotel in Kampala. The meeting aimed to build on prior discussions initiated by the Heads of State from both countries.
The Ministers signed an Implementation Agreement focused on developing concrete strategies to bolster cooperation and promote unity in addressing shared security challenges.
Hon. Oboth emphasized the need to turn these discussions into practical plans, highlighting the countries’ mutual goal of tackling regional threats and strengthening support throughout the Horn of Africa.
HE Abdulkadir commended the vital role played by the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) in Somalia, acknowledging that their presence has not only stabilized the area but also laid the groundwork for educational and community development efforts.
“We value the dedication and sacrifices made by everyone involved. This joint endeavor is key for continued support and progress in Somalia,” said Abdulkadir.
He further noted that the partnership reflects common Pan-African values and unity, which are essential for the smooth transfer of security responsibilities to Somali authorities.
Lt. Gen. Sam Okiding, Deputy Chief of Defence Forces of the UPDF, highlighted the cultural and historical bonds between the two countries, calling Somalia a place of “shared heritage” and “home” for both nations. He emphasized the importance of turning initial agreements into sustainable outcomes that benefit both parties.
The Commander of the Somalia National Armed Forces, Maj. Gen. Ibrahim Sheikh Muhudin, expressed gratitude to Uganda for its steadfast commitment to combating terrorism and supporting stability during critical times.
He acknowledged the UPDF’s contributions and the collaborative efforts of technical teams from both countries in defining troop roles and responsibilities.
The meeting was attended by Brig. Gen. Micheal Kabango, Chief of Staff Land Force; Brig. Gen. David Gonyi, Chief of Staff UPDF – Air Force; Brig. Gen. Dr. Patrick Ochen, Deputy Joint Staff Health Services; Yakub Yakub Ahmed, Jihan Habibo Sheikh Hassan, Ahmed Suldan Farah from Somalia, and other senior UPDF officers.
