Government through the Ministry of Transport and Works is in the final stages of coming up with a national road safety action plan, geared at reducing road accidents by at least 50% by the year 2030.
This was in message delivered by the Director in charge of Transport in the Ministry, Benon Kajuma, on behalf of General Katumba Wamala during the climax of the silver jubilee celebrations for the Uganda Road Accidents Reduction Network Organization (URRENO) at Hotel Africana in Kampala.
The URRENO Executive Director Fred Tumwine Nkuruho called for more government’s intervention in supporting civil society organizations dealing with road safety.
Reducing road accidents on Ugandan roads calls for a joint action between government, civil society, the private sector and the general public.
Government is set to come out with a national road safety action plan, geared at reducing road accidents by at least 50% by the year 2030.
The new plan will be basically be premised on three areas of road engineering standards, education and awareness and enhancing the general enforcement of all the laws related to traffic and road safety.
Some of the activities in the week preceding the climax , included road safety sensitization for boda-bodas, bus and taxi o drivers, school children among others.
