A celebratory mood filled Parliament on Wednesday as 184 Members of Parliament-elect took oath on the first day of the swearing-in exercise ahead of the commencement of the 12th Parliament.
The ceremony, presided over by Clerk to Parliament Adolf Mwesige, attracted newly elected legislators accompanied by family members, supporters, and political aides. Cultural performances by Crane Performance added colour to the event with traditional music and dances from different parts of the country.
Several MPs-elect used the occasion to outline their priorities for the new parliamentary term, with many pledging to focus on poverty eradication, agriculture, household incomes, healthcare, education, and infrastructure development.
Anita Among urged legislators to dedicate themselves to serving Ugandans, echoing President Yoweri Museveni’s message that the new term would be “Kisanja Hakuna Kulala,” meaning a term of hard work and commitment to wananchi. She also praised the 11th Parliament as one of the country’s most representative legislatures.
Among the leaders sworn in were Robinah Nabbanja, Rebecca Kadaga, Chris Baryomunsi and Anne Adeke, who all highlighted key priorities ranging from wealth creation and industrialisation to political transition and minimum wage advocacy.
The swearing-in exercise will continue until Friday ahead of the first sitting of the 12th Parliament scheduled for May 25, 2026.
