Parliament’s Committee on Appointments today, Tuesday, 2 June 2026, commence the vetting of 81 presidential nominees for various Cabinet and State Minister positions.
The exercise is being chaired by Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth, with Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa serving as his deputy. The committee also includes the Leader of the Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, and Members of Parliament representing different political parties.
The nominees were appointed by President Yoweri Museveni on 26 May 2026, and Parliament subsequently approved the composition of the Committee on Appointments during a plenary sitting last week.
The vetting process began at 7:30 a.m., with several ministers-designate appearing before the committee, including Crispus Kiyonga, nominated as 2nd Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader of Government Business in Parliament, Frank Tumwebaze for Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, and Jonard Asiimwe for Science, Technology and Innovation.
The Committee on Appointments is mandated under Rule 173 of Parliament’s Rules of Procedure to scrutinise and approve or reject presidential nominees for public office. The exercise is scheduled to continue through today, after which the Speaker will communicate the committee’s decisions to the President within three working days.
