The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reaffirmed its commitment to health diplomacy and national cancer prevention efforts through its participation in the 15th edition of the Rotary Cancer Run, scheduled for Sunday, August 30, at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.
The Ministry made the commitment during a media activation held in Kampala ahead of the annual run, which will be held under the theme “Gwanga Mujje.”
Speaking on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, Amb. Charles Ssentongo said the Ministry, together with Uganda’s missions abroad, has consistently supported the Rotary Cancer Run as part of efforts to promote the health and well-being of Ugandans both at home and in the diaspora.
According to the Chairman of the Rotary Cancer Run 2026 Organising Committee, Meddie Lutaaya, the initiative has raised UGX 8.21 billion since its inception and continues to attract more than 200,000 participants annually across Uganda and the diaspora.
The funds raised through the run have also supported more than 50,000 cancer screenings through community medical camps, while UGX 1.5 billion has been contributed towards the establishment of the Mengo Blood Bank.
This year’s run is raising funds towards the construction of a state-of-the-art Cancer Centre at St. Francis Hospital Nsambya.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will participate as a Ruby Sponsor with a contribution of UGX 10 million and has also procured running kits for its staff participating in the 21km, 10km and 5km categories.
Amb. Ssentongo called on Ministry staff and the wider public to turn up for the run and show solidarity with cancer patients, survivors and healthcare workers.
He emphasised that tackling cancer requires concerted action, sustained investment and collective responsibility across all sectors of society.
