The Ministry of Health has launched a medical logistics drone flight to deliver essential medical supplies to island health facilities and transport laboratory samples for testing, in a move aimed at improving healthcare access in hard-to-reach communities.
The flight was launched by the Minister of State for Health in charge of Primary Health Care, Hon. Dr. Charles Ayume, along a route from Butabika to Koome, onward to Kalangala Town Council and back to Butabika.

The drone carried essential medical supplies to health facilities serving island communities and returned with laboratory samples for testing, helping address transportation challenges that can delay diagnosis and access to treatment.
According to Dr. Ayume, evidence gathered from the flights will guide decisions on how drone transportation can be integrated into Uganda’s existing Integrated National Sample Transport Network.

The initiative is intended to strengthen the timely and reliable transportation of laboratory samples from hard-to-reach communities, supporting faster diagnosis and improved delivery of healthcare services.
The Ministry of Health says the initiative could help address logistical barriers faced by island communities, where transporting medical supplies and samples can be challenging.
The drone flights form part of efforts to explore innovative ways of improving healthcare delivery and ensuring that communities in remote areas receive essential medical services more efficiently.
