In a shocking turn of events, Pastor Aloysius Bugingo of the House of Prayer Ministries has broken his silence after surviving an attempted assassination on Tuesday night. Unknown assailants attacked him as he headed home, tragically resulting in the death of his loyal bodyguard, Richard Muhumuza.
The incident occurred around 9 pm at Buwalakata road junction, Namungona, Lubaga Division in Kampala, where gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire on Pastor Bugingo’s vehicle, registered as PRAIZ GOD. Despite sustaining minor injuries, Bugingo managed to transport the critically wounded Muhumuza to Mulago Hospital. Unfortunately, Muhumuza succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, confirmed that comprehensive investigations into the attempted murder of Pastor Bugingo and the killing of his bodyguard have commenced. Owoyesigyire stated, “We are thoroughly reviewing CCTV footage to identify the assailants. Updates will be provided as additional information becomes available.”
The timely response of security forces was hindered by locals who had tampered with the scene before their arrival. Now, the police are reliant on CCTV cameras to piece together the assailants’ movements.
In a video shared on social media, Pastor Bugingo expressed gratitude for the prayers and reassured his followers of his stable condition. He thanked God for sparing his life and urged continued prayers. “God has just given me another chance to live. There should be no fear or worries; we shall go through this by God’s grace. Do not be misled by anyone claiming that I am dead. I’m alive,” he affirmed.
The attempted assassination adds to a series of targeted attacks in Kampala, raising concerns about the safety of prominent figures. Meanwhile, former Kawempe MP Mubarak Munyagwa’s home was also attacked on the same night. Although Munyagwa is unharmed, his home guard sustained injuries.
As investigations unfold, the city remains on edge, grappling with the aftermath of a night marked by violence and uncertainty. The attempted assassination of a prominent religious leader underscores the need for heightened security measures and community vigilance in the face of such alarming incidents.
